Thank you for your interest in UKIYOE AIUEO.

I’m a Japanese creator and art manager, born and raised in Japan.
I have worked internationally, organizing exhibitions and events that introduce Japanese culture to the world.

I now live in France and am raising a bilingual child. Wanting to share my heritage with my son in a fun and engaging way, I created a picture book that combines ukiyo-e and hiragana.

This experience inspired me to start a new project. My goal is to help people around the world enjoy learning Japanese and discovering its culture through beautiful visuals and storytelling.

 

The world is filled with countless boundaries drawn by human beings. In contrast to the fluidity of the natural world, people have drawn clear lines between land, time, systems, roles, and even between self and others, building societies while maintaining order. Yet while these lines help organize the world, they also give rise to division and loneliness. In today’s world, the speed and density with which such boundaries are drawn seem only to be increasing, and people appear to be living within ever finer lines.

Within such a world, I believe that language, culture, and storytelling have the power to cross boundaries between self and others, and between different cultures, creating new understanding and connection.

KIKO, the fox who journeys through ukiyo-e, was created as a guide who connects people and culture by crossing many kinds of boundaries. Moving across fields, countries, eras, and media, KIKO aspires to open the door to Japanese language and culture, as well as to the many worlds that unfold beyond them.

Ukiyo-e originally emerged as a popular visual culture that reflected the everyday life, trends, and stories of ordinary people. Today, it is widely known as a classical art form displayed in museums, but in its own time, it was also an open and accessible medium, said to have been enjoyed for the price of a bowl of soba noodles.

At UKIYOE AIUEO, I seek to honor both the richness and the open spirit of ukiyo-e while sharing its world with contemporary audiences through animation and storytelling. Rather than leaving ukiyo-e closed off as a cultural legacy of the past, I hope to reopen it as a gateway to culture and learning today.

I create everything myself—animation, stories, and music—with care and love.

このプロジェクトは、日本生まれ・日本育ちのクリエイター／アートマネージャーが、ひとりで運営しています。

これまで世界各地で、日本文化を紹介する展覧会やイベントの企画に携わってきました。現在はフランスに暮らし、バイリンガルの子どもを育てています。
息子に日本語と日本文化を楽しく伝えたいという想いから、浮世絵とひらがなを組み合わせた本『浮世絵あいうえお　ひらがな本』を制作しました。

その経験から、浮世絵の美しいビジュアルとストーリーテリングを通して、日本語や日本文化を世界中の人々に楽しく学んでもらいたいという願いが生まれ、UKIYOE AIUEOプロジェクトがスタートしました。

 

世界は、人間の引いたさまざまな境界線であふれています。流動的な自然界に対し、人間は土地、時間、制度、役割、あるいは他者と自己のあいだに明確な線を引き、秩序を保ちながら社会を築いてきました。けれども、その線は世界を整理する一方で、分断や孤独も生み出します。現代では、そうした境界線が引かれるスピードも密度も増し、人はますます細かい線の中に生きるようになったと感じます。

そうした世界の中で、私は、ことばや文化、物語には、自分自身や他者、異なる文化とのあいだにある境界を越え、新しい理解やつながりを生み出す力があると信じています。

浮世絵を旅するきつねのKIKOは、さまざまな境界線を越えて、人と文化をつなぐ案内役として生まれたキャラクターです。分野や国、時代、メディアを越えながら、日本語や日本文化、そしてその先に広がるさまざまな世界へといざなう存在でありたいと考えています。

浮世絵は、もともと人々の暮らしや流行、物語を映し出す、大衆のための視覚文化でした。今では美術館で鑑賞される古典作品として知られていますが、当時はそば一杯ほどの価格で親しまれたともいわれています。
UKIYOE AIUEOでは、そうした浮世絵の魅力とひらかれた精神に敬意を持ちながら、アニメーションやストーリーテリングを通して、現代の人々に届くかたちで伝えていきたいと考えています。

アニメーション、ストーリー、音楽など、すべてをひとりで心を込めて制作しています。
